(or, Like Camp Granada, Only Nerdier and Wordier)

The NaNoWriMo shirt I ordered a few days ago arrived in the mail today. Of course, I had to try it on to make sure it fit. I happened to be holding a camera at the time, so it only seemed logical to snap a shot.

Camp NaNoWriMo Shirt

The month-long 50,000-word challenge is 25 days away. Last year, my 5-year winning streak ended. The loss was devastating. This year, though, I'm using my failure as extra motivation to finish. I also plan on using my newly acquired shirt as a source of inspiration.

A few years ago, I tried something I called 30 Cafes In 30 Days. The idea was to write part of my novel in a different cafe each day. This year, I thought I would try something along the same vein, but incorporate the shirt-inspired idea of camping.

The idea would be to visit as many parks as possible in the month of November and find a spot (a.k.a. set up camp) to write a bit of my novel. Ideally, I would visit various national parks in California, writing a few horrible passages in each one. Realistically, I'll be committing awful crimes against literature in numerous nearby county parks.

If the idea of writing a novel in a month sounds appealing to you, I encourage you to give it a try. If you have trouble wrapping your head around writing so many words, remember, quantity trumps quality. Plus, if you participate, you can place this spiffy badge on your blog/Facebook page/forehead.

By the way, starting in November, you'll be able to follow my progress (or lack of it) here on my blog (likely in the sidebar) or on my official NaNoWriMo page. You can also score your own Camp NaNoWriMo shirt here.

» NaNoWriMo 2009: The Wrap from Random Curiosity

After last year's NaNoWriMo loss, I wasn't sure I'd be able to manage a victory this year, but by adopting traits closely resembling concentration and persistence, I somehow succeeded. It took all thirty days, but I was able to... Read More

Aaarrrgghhhh! I'm so torn on whether or not to participate. I tried once and fizzled out after a measly 5,000 words. I let too many other things compete for my attention. I haven't yet solved that issue, but the urge to try it is there nonetheless.

Other complication: I've got three novels already in progress, and working on any of those would be against the rules...so I'd have to start a new one.

Gaaahh!

(repeat various frustrated noises until you get the idea...)

I think I get the idea, Tee, so no additional arghs or gahs are necessary. :P

I'm tempted to say chuck the rules and use NaNo as a chance to move ahead on one or all of your novels in progress. Think of it as the writing equivalent of a "get out of jail free" card -- the perfect excuse to temporarily ignore everything else vying for your attention. I'm tempted to say it, but that would just be my guy instinct kicking in and trying to fix things, so I won't. :D

the camp thing sounds like a good idea. i wish i could participate too, but alas, i have neither the time, nor (let's be honest) the talent of you! :p

have fun though and good luck! :)

Thanks, gg. You've got plenty in the talent department, but I can see how you might be short on time. I, on the other hand, have little talent, but lots of time, which helps balance things out a bit. :P

Alright, I did it. Since I've only got a few pages written on one of the novels, I'll pull those out and start fresh. After 50,000 words if I really miss them I'll put them back in.

Sweet! We all can now struggle and suffer together. With any luck, we'll also succeed together. We have a little less than two weeks of sanity left to enjoy before the craziness begins! :D
