A Poem About Math And Love (By Somebody Else)

Poem on my mind... "The Square Root of Three" by David Feinberg, as heard on Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

The Square Root of Three

I fear that I will always be
A lonely number like root three

A three is all that's good and right
Why must my three keep out of sight
Beneath a vicious square root sign?

I wish instead I were a nine
For nine could thwart this evil trick
with just some quick arithmetic

I know I'll never see the sun
as one point seven three two one

Such is my reality
a sad irrationality

When, hark, just what is this I see?
Another square root of a three
Has quietly come waltzing by

Together now we multiply
And form a number we prefer
Rejoicing as an integer

We break free from our mortal bonds
And with the wave of magic wands

Our square root signs become unglued
And love, for me, has been renewed

This tender, dorky poem about love and math, which Kumar recited near the end of the movie, was one of the film's rare high points (more notable due to its vast quantity of low points).

If this film hadn't starred Kal Penn and John Cho, I likely wouldn't have watched it at all. The main reason I did was because it's one of two movies in recent memory that featured Asian Americans close to my age in lead roles. The other movie, by the way, was Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.

How about The Namesake, also starring Kal Penn? I really really liked that one.

Elkit, thanks for the recommendation. That one has actually been in my Netflix queue for months, but I'm bumping it to the top now that you've mentioned it. If I remember correctly, it was shown at Cinequest last year.
