I apologize for the unexpected nine-day hiatus. Actually, the time away from the computer wasn't unexpected. I knew I wouldn't have access to one while visiting Walt Disney World in Florida. I just thought I would be able to blog from my iPhone while I was there. Obviously, that didn't happen.
I did give it a try when I first arrived, but Movable Type's interface was nearly impossible to use on an iPhone. The iPhone also doesn't have copy and paste commands, which didn't help. Maybe now that Apple has opened the iPhone to third-party developers, somebody will produce a nifty word processor for it.
Another factor that might have contributed to a lack of writing was a lack of motivation. It was bizarre. There I was, immersed in a world of imagination, and I couldn't seem to spark my own creativity. It was like my mind was locked in attentive mode. All I could do was look, listen, and experience. It wasn't until I was on the plane home that I could finally switch it to expressive mode. All I did on the westward flight was write.
While I was gone, a couple of things happened that I didn't get a chance to write about: Boston won the World Series and NaNoWriMo began (it began, I haven't). I hope to catch up on both of them over the next few days, in between sharing photos and writing about the trip.
By the way, contrary to any rumors I might try to spread, this hiatus was not due to a writer's strike. I was not holding out for a greater percentage of the revenue generated from this site. Goodness knows I should, but it would make more sense to do so if this site didn't generate a negative cashflow.

David,
My friend V. & I did the Joseph D. Grant Co Park the other day. It's the largest Santa Clara County Park w/ some great views. They have 1 Strenuous hike (1200' elevation gain) called: Grant Lake/Halls Valley/Canada De Pala/Pala Seca/Las Huecos Trails that makes a 9.2 mi loop.
Along Canada de Pala Trail there's Pala Seca Cabin that looks like work has been done to it, plus there's a pit toilet w/ water to wash your hands! We also did an extra .2 each way to go to Antler Point (2995 elevation-there's a good view there w/ a bench).
We started at 10am and finished by 3:20pm w/ a 20-30 min break for lunch. We took lots of breaks because it's a tough hike and it was so warm today. I hate hiking in hot weather.
We also did the Moderate (400' elevation gain) Hotel/Yerba Buena/Bass Lk/Hotel Trails, supposed to be 2.2 mi loop ( we think it's longer). This hike had to climb over 2 fences, that's evil. This we started at 3:30pm until 5pm. 1.5hrs to do.
We saw: a Praying Mantis, a running coyote, quails, rattlesnake, blue birds, & a woodpecker..this is my experience, u might or might not see them. Nice views of Lick Observatory on the strenuous hike.
Parking fee: $6, they take Credit Cards we found out. No person in the ranger booth when we went, we just tried the credit card & it worked. Flushed toilets at main lot, other parking lot had a nasty pit toilet & an outside drinking fountain.

Sounds like you had a great hike (except for those two fences). Thanks for sharing it and your photos, too. I wish I could escape today to hike it, but I'll have to wait until Veterans' Day before I can hit the trail. And thanks for the credit tip. Whenever I visit parks, I'm always paranoid I won't have the exact amount. Being able to pay by card solves that.
