A Garlicky Weekend

| | Comments (2)

According to the local news, the temperature is supposed to reach a high of 89 degrees in the town I live in (a.k.a. Smallville). When I left the house this morning, it was foggy and only 60. Unless the sun was planning some last minute heroics, I doubt the valley will even make it into the low 80s by midday.

For people who like to bake and burn outdoors, this weekend's Gilroy Garlic Festival is the perfect opportunity. Everybody there will come out smelling like roses garlic when it's over, especially if it reaches the low 90s as forecasters predict.

Since last year was my first time at the festival, I learned three valuable lessons that potential visitors might find handy. Consider them "helpful hints" to make the experience more enjoyable (and odoriferous):
  1. There won't be much shade, so remember to apply plenty of garlic sunscreen SPF 50, especially to the neck and shoulders.
  2. Due to the heat, dehydration is a real risk, so drink plenty of garlic water.
  3. Before kissing the Gilroy Garlic Queen, don't forget to pop in a few garlic breath mints. This goes for both guys and gals.

Organizers are expecting huge crowds over the weekend, so I'll likely avoid the craziness this year. With any luck, I won't miss out entirely. There's always the chance (with the right wind direction) that the stink scent of garlic will begin wafting through Smallville this evening and hang in the air for days to come. That should be fun.

just came back from the Gilroy Garlic Festival today. park your car, then ride a free shuttle bus to the park entrance, buy your tickets $10pp, pay lots more for food: $6 pepper steak sandwich, $4 for 4 stuffed mushrooms, or get the combo plate 1 or 2 for $10..think half a pepper steak sandwich w/ pasta, garlic bread. Look at arts/craft then cool off at the Rain Room.
Bring lots of water in backpack, and use the backpack to store all the free junk you can pick up. Free garlic ice-cream in one booth near the back, free cup of H20 near the entrance, music and such. Spent 3 hrs and $21. Cool in the morning but then warmed up..will be very busy traffic over the weekend.

Thanks for the info! It sounds like you had fun. I remember the Rain Room from last year. They should've had more of those. :P It's probably best to get there first thing in the morning to beat the traffic and the heat. Today was probably the best day to go. I can only imagine how crowded the place will be tomorrow and Sunday. :)
